These boards have a tough Polyethylene outer layer, a spongy foam on the inside, with a wooden stringer system.

They are light, tough, and pretty much ding proof.  They have a lot of volume, and are very easy to ride.

They are not indestructable, however, and can be broken surfing big waves in shallow water.  The same holds true for conventional fiberglass surfboards, though.

In normal use they are really tough and the outer layer is not easily damaged.  They aren't  quiet as good looking as the liquid shredders, but they are an easy board to ride, and a good value in a first board.
