The XL is one of Ocean Kayak's most user friendly tandems, and is a great family boat. It has more storage, and greater load capacity than the Malibu Two.
It too will carry two adults and a child, and can be paddled solo.
An oval hatch kit is available which will provide in hull storage capacity. Hatches are no longer available as a factory installed option.

This kayak comes with 2 basic seat backs. Various hatch kits are available for folks who want to install their own hatches. Factory installed hatches are no longer available. If you look closely you can see the locations where hatches may be installed. This boat will take one large oval hatch, and two 8" Gaspachi hatches if you want to install them.
The malibu 2 xl and the malibu two are both very user friendly tandem kayaks. Even the smaller members of your family will feel comfortable kayaking in these boats. Just be sure you have a good PFD on those young uns! The malibu two xl is a bit faster, being slightly longer. This kayak can be car topped easily with a set of soft rackpads.
