Sit On Top Kayak Sales In The Destin Area Since 1997

All of the kayaks above are sit on top kayaks. When you first hear sit on top you visualize someone sitting on a surfboard, or something of the sort. Sit on tops are similar to regular kayaks with some important differences. You will notice that there is no deck over your knees. Sit on tops also have holes called scupper holes that drain the cockpit quickly if a wave splashes inside, or if you tip your kayak over. They are very user friendly and easy to master. If you are planning on fishing from a kayak you need to be sure all of your fishing gear is lashed down or secured until you need it, especially when going through the surf line.

Sit On Top Fishing, Recovering From A capsize

Beginning kayakers, if you tip a sit on top over, over all of the water drains out when you turn it upright. Getting back in is fairly easy. I have found that if you stick both arms into the air you will sink, and in a moment your life jacket will propel you back to the surface. Give a quick kick with your legs when you start up, and when you come out of the water just place both your hands in the center of your kayak, and then just try to jump over the kayak, using your arms to lift you. When your body is across the kayak you can roll on your back and swing your legs back inside. I have also heard that you can lie horizontally in the water and try to roll into your kayak while pushing one side down into the water. I haven't personally tried that technique.

As you can see that is a great argument for wearing your PFD or life vest. Both of those tasks are really difficult without a PFD. Another great accessory is a paddle leash, which keeps your paddle with the kayak. Leashes for rods and other gear are a good idea too. Check out our kayak fishing section. You don't have to make a choice whether to retrieve the paddle, or the kayak first, and then while the other drifts away.
